The Job Situation For Teenagers

By Stoney Graham | June 27, 2009

Teenagers that are 15 years old are rarely thought of when considering the bad economic situation. It is usually when teens turn 16 that they start looking for jobs and this might have something to do with them wanting a car and needing dating money. For those who are 15 year olds, it might be a little harder to find employers that will take a chance on them.

Teenagers that are 15 will have little job experience and if a company has lots of applications for its jobs, they might go to those that are older. It could be easier if you are that young to get a job in a small town where everybody knows one another. If you live in a small town, you are friends with a lot more people and it imight be easier to help one another out and make job connections for young kids.

Getting a job for teens right now is real hard because of the economic situation. The economy is such that teens are the last ones to be hired. It always pays to know people and have as many connections as possible and those that do will have the best chance of getting the few jobs that will be open. Of course there are still a couple of months between now and summer but the way things have been going, it doesn’t look like much is going to change.

Another option for teens is to go on the Internet to see what opportunities exist there. Unfortunately online jobs for teens aren’t a much better prospect as most everything requires you to be at least 18. The only thing the internet can help teens do is to apply online for jobs and search for jobs. Learning how to use the online job sites is a skill that will serve them well down the road.

Short of a job with a real company, an enterprising teen can work to create his or her own job online or offline though through some sort of freelance work. Teens often know more about computers than their parents and if they can learn how to put these computer skills to work, they might be able to generate an online income. Teens know how to communicate and network online and with this skill they can get the word out that they are for hire. They also know how to make connections in their neighborhoods to find local work like mowing lawns and weeding gardens.

Teens are able to do the jobs that are extremly part time offer a good bitof extra cash for them – I would think a recession would effect these sorts of jobs less?
