When one makes the decision to go into a mental health field as a career there are many options available. The individual opting for this career should be dedicated to helping others in difficult situations, be prepared for life long learning and a dedication to commitment. Some psychiatry jobs are more intense than others and there is a difference in working as a psychologist and as a psychiatrist.
Becoming a doctor is possible in both fields, the difference as a psychiatrist they are a medical doctor and a psychologist could have a doctorate degree. The doctorate degree could be either a PhD or a PsyD; however, they are not licensed to practice medicine. Both will have their specializations relating to psychology and both have a specific type of psychology they prefer to utilize in their practice.
When children are the primary clients, they are referred to as child psychologist or child psychiatrist. They have taken courses designed for the treatment of children as well as the families involved in a Childs life. This is a very important and popular choice among many; however, it is important to note that it is not only the child you will deal with. Those choosing this field have to be able to handle many situations that involve family members that may or may not have been a positive influence in the Childs life.
To have a specialization in sports psychology means the clients are somehow involved in sports, they could be players or coaches. Many of the clients seen in this field are seeking assistance with many different areas relating to their involvement with a sport. For example, it could a client that is having difficulties controlling a temper while playing or they could be having difficulties handling peer pressure. There are many different situations for the client to seek professional help.
The forensic field is not always silence of lambs type clients. It does normally involve working with someone in a criminal situation. The individual could be claiming an insanity plea and your job would be to determine if they were insane at the time of the crime or you could be called as a professional witness specializing in a particular field of crime. It will always be of a different nature. Criminal psychology is more often trying to determine the behavior aspect and reason for the criminal behavior.
To become psychiatrists there is a tremendous amount of ongoing education. After completing their bachelors degree in science and another four years of medical school, they must then complete an internship and a residency program. They must also take board examinations and pass to become licensed. Throughout their career they will take numerous required credit classes or renewal type course, they are required to have so many per year.
They are medical doctors which mean they are entitled to prescribe medications. A psychologist, even with a doctorate degree cannot prescribe medications. Contrary to popular belief a psychiatrist will not generally write a prescription and send the patient away. They are still concerned with treating the problem for which the patient may need medications. As a general psychiatrist they will usually treat patients of all ages for a variety of mental illnesses.
To simply say you are interested in psychiatry jobs as a form of work is not a simple process. It takes many years to work as a psychiatrist. The individual who chooses this path for a career has to be extremely dedicated to the involvement in this form of work.
