Dominating the opening

You may or may not find it natural to go up to somebody and just start striking up a conversation, but if you are called for an interview – that’s what you have to do. Research suggests that the interview has largely made up their mind in the first 15 seconds as to whether or not they will consider hiring you. You need to do whatever is possible to control those first exchanges. Here are some hints:

1. You can’t be over courteous to the various people that you meet on your way to the interview room. Treat everybody with respect – you never know who’s watching…

2. Behave appropriately to everybody you see whilst waiting your turn to enter the room. Smile and look interested and keen.

3. Offer a firm handshake when you look at your interviewer in the eye. Make sure that you are smiling.

4. Interview etiquette states that you should wait to be seated.

5. Dress as well as you can afford. Dress smartly and conservatively.

6. Show yourself to be well organized, by having all things needed for the interview.

7. Don’t be stuffing your face with food or drinks whilst waiting your turn for the interview.

8. Dont chat on your cell phone while waiting for your interviewer. It makes you look distracted.

Best of luck with your interview
